PALEONTOLOGY: C. STOCK A TARSIID PRIMATE AND A MIXODECTID FROM THE POWA Y EOCENE, CALIFORNIA By CHESTER STOCK

چکیده
Introduction.-Following the discovery and description of a titanotherel in the Poway sands of San Diego County, continued excavation in this important Eocene horizon has produced small lots of mammalian remains. One of these included specimens of a tarsiid primate and a mixodectid. Worthy of mention is the fact that the former represents a third member of the Tarsiidae to be discovered in the early Tertiary of the Pacific Coast region. Since the Poway fauna possesses considerable significance in any attempt to correlate the later Eocene horizons of the Pacific Coast with those of the Cordilleran Province, it seems desirable to place on record these new mammals from the Poway.

An Eocene Primate from California.
lntroduction.-Recognition of a primate in the mammalian assemblage now being recorded from one of the faunal stages of the Sespe, north of the Simi Valley, California, comes with startling abruptness, yet is not wholly unexpected. No fewer than five fragments of jaws, probably representing as many individuals, have been found recently. The sudden appearance of this material in the collections o...

متن کاملNew notharctine (Primates, Adapiformes) skull from the Uintan (middle Eocene) of San Diego County, California.
A new genus and species of notharctine primate, Hesperolemur actius, is described from Uintan (middle Eocene) aged rocks of San Diego County, California. Hesperolemur differs from all previously described adapiforms in having the anterior third of the ectotympanic anulus fused to the internal lateral wall of the auditory bulla. In this feature Hesperolemur superficially resembles extant cheirog...
متن کاملPhylogeny, paleontology, and primates: do incomplete fossils bias the tree of life?
Paleontological systematics relies heavily on morphological data that have undergone decay and fossilization. Here, we apply a heuristic means to assess how a fossil's incompleteness detracts from inferring its phylogenetic relationships. We compiled a phylogenetic matrix for primates and simulated the extinction of living species by deleting an extant taxon's molecular data and keeping only th...
متن کاملThe integration of quantitative genetics, paleontology, and neontology reveals genetic underpinnings of primate dental evolution.
Developmental genetics research on mice provides a relatively sound understanding of the genes necessary and sufficient to make mammalian teeth. However, mouse dentitions are highly derived compared with human dentitions, complicating the application of these insights to human biology. We used quantitative genetic analyses of data from living nonhuman primates and extensive osteological and pal...
